A FASCINATING INSIGHT INTO NEW ZEALAND'S EARLY HISTORY

The Goldfields Mining Centre is more than just an historic reserve. Its location in the Kawarau Gorge offers numerous spectacular views of the river and the stark grandeur of the hillsides surrounding the park. The walks through the park take you on a voyage of discovery at every turn.

Watercourses and dams supplied the early miners with the water they needed to wash the gold from the soil. Thousands of carefully stacked stones bear mute testimony to the incredible efforts made to excavate the precious metal from every worked claim.

In spring and summer, the park comes to life with myriads of wild flowers, while underfoot, wild thyme perfumes the clear air.
